What's new for the 2023 Subaru Outback?
There are a few subtle updates to the exterior of the 2023 model, including a redesigned front fascia and new exterior cladding. The Onyx Edition trim now offers two engine options. It has the latest version of EyeSight which includes a wide-angle mono camera and adds an enhanced collision mitigation safety system for the Touring trim level. The infotainment system is updated to include Bluetooth connectivity for wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.
Trims and Performance
For 2023, the Outback comes available in eight distinct all-wheel-drive trim levels-Base, Premium, Limited, Touring, Onyx Edition, Wilderness, Limited XT, and Touring XT-and two powertrains based on trim:
- The Base, Premium, Limited, Touring, and Onyx Edition trims come equipped with a 2.5-liter flat-four-cylinder engine that creates 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque paired with an automatic continuously variable transmission (CVT) and can tow up to 2,700 pounds.
- Powering the Wilderness, Limited XT, and Touring XT trims-and optional for the Onyx Edition-is a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that delivers 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque that can tow up to 3,500 pounds.
With 17-inch wheels and an 8.7-inch ground clearance, the sporty Outback easily traverses rough weather and road obstacles. For adventure-seeking drivers who regularly go off the beaten path over rugged terrain, the Outback Wilderness is a perfect choice. It has a 9.5-inch ground clearance with an enhanced suspension, protective skid plates, and multiple drive modes that seamlessly adapt to snowy, icy, or muddy roads.
Design
The new 2023 Outback has a spacious five-passenger cabin with plenty of standard features with every trim, additional standard features on higher trims, and plenty of optional add-ons or upgrades. Typical for all trims:
Interior
- 60/40 split-flat-folding reclining rear seats
- Dual 7-inch touchscreen displays
- Underfloor cargo storage with a removable cargo-area tray
Exterior
- Raised roof rails
- Two-speed windshield wipers and a single-speed rear wiper
- Automatic wiper-linked headlights
Higher trims have additional standard features such as a powered moonroof, leather-upholstered seats, a heated steering wheel, and heated, ventilated, and power-adjustable front seats. Select trims get upgraded leather upholstery with contrast stitching and heated rear seats. The Wilderness trim gets an upgraded roof rack that can hold up to 700-pounds, water-repellent simulated leather upholstery, and a lifted suspension for more ground clearance. There's plenty of legroom for all passengers in the new Outback, making the rear seat more accommodating and comfortable for taller passengers.
Cargo
You'll get 32.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats that expand when the rear seats fold flat to a whopping 75.6 cubic feet, which is enough room to hold extra pieces of luggage, at least 25 bags of groceries, camping or sports gear, and secure your dog's crate in place. The raised roof rails expand the cargo area with integrated crossbars and tie hooks for attaching luggage, bicycles, or boat racks.
Technology
The Premium trim gets an 11.6-inch vertical touchscreen display that replaces the smaller 7-inch dual displays. Select trims have more standard features or are available as add-ons or upgrades, including a navigation system, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and wireless charging. Other standard technology features include:
- Keyless entry and push-button start
- Hands-free powered rear lift-gate
- Illuminated front and rear USB charging ports
- Harman Kardon 12-speaker premium audio system on select trims
